| Batoni was one of the great painters from Lucca; a pupil of Domenico Brugieri and Giorgio Domenico Lombardi. When he was very young Batoni went to Rome where he made an intensive study of the old masters, particularly Raphael. During and after the 1730's he was extensively commissioned for religious and mythological works. Batoni became well known after about 1740 and was internationally celebrated for his portraits of royalty and church hierarchy. In 1741, he became part of the prestigious Accademica di San Luca in Rome, where he spent the rest of his life. Works Held: Prado, Spain; Louvre, Paris; Uffizi. |
