| John Tilton, an American was such a highly regarded painter in Europe that he was approached to join the Royal Academy's exhibition of 1873. He exhibited at Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art and the National Academy of Design; where he became a member in 1861. The artist traveled through Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Greece and Egypt, finally settling in Rome the last seven years of his life.
