| Without a doubt one of the most important and innovative artists in American history. Innes' influence is widely felt even today. During his own time, his works were compared to Corot and Rousseau. Known for his independent and poetic style, Inness suppressed the details of his works and created dramatic tonal contrasts. This painting is signed and dated lower right. It is our belief that it was executed during the period that Inness was in France. Works Held: Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY; Art Institute of Chicago; Corcoran, Washington, D.C., Boston, and numerous other American institutions and also in Europe. |
